If you are an author, or you expect to create VENDINFO records for testing purposes, you should plan to leave all these files in that directory. If you are a distributor, and plan to use only VendPrcs, then it will eventually be appropriate for you to place VENDPRCS.EXE on your path, and many of these materials will not be needed after your familiarization with the toolset is complete. Once you've installed this package: o If you're an author, or wish to try out VendEdit, simply execute the command "VENDEDIT" WHILE IN THE VendEdit DIRECTORY. Select "Help", and read through the first few items in the help index. You should find all the information you need. o If you're a distributor, or wish to try out VendPrcs, you should begin by reading VENDPRCS.DOC. For authors, the basic VendPrcs functions are executed automatically from VendEdit. ===== Warranty ========================================= LIMITED WARRANTY The evaluation ("shareware") version of the VENDINFO toolset is provided for evaluation only, on an "as is" basis. The registered version is provided with a 30-day money-back guarantee, provided all materials are returned, and -- in the case of the editor -- no products have been distributed with included VENDINFO files. This toolset is intended for use by producers and distributors of shareware and similar products, who are assumed to be familiar with the use of software tools. The included tools allow both production and evaluation of VENDINFO files, and provide all the capabilities necessary for the user to verify correct functioning of those tools for his/her purposes. Users are advised to do so. You MAY NOT distribute VENDINFO.DIZ files that lack authentication codes. These codes are tied to your company name, and are produced only by the registered version of VendEdit. They are intended to provide a level of source authentication for your VENDINFO.DIZ files. If you continue using this software after the thirty-day evaluation period, or wish to produce "authenticated" VENDINFO.DIZ files for distribution with your products, you MUST make the prescribed registration payment to Rams' Island Software. (NOTE: Single-line BBSes which are not associated with a business, and which do not charge fees to their users, may register VendPrcs without charge; see REGISTER.FRM.) LICENSE TERMS APPLICABLE TO USE OF REGISTERED VERSION The software and the disks on which it is contained are licensed on a non-exclusive basis to you, the purchaser, for your own use. You are not obtaining title to the software or any copyright rights. If you have purchased a license to use the VendEdit editor, you may also make use of the VendPrcs processor for the purpose of verifying correct functioning of VendEdit and correct contents of the VENDINFO.DIZ files you produce. Any other use of VendPrcs requires a separate license. Similarly, purchase of a VendPrcs license allows you to use VendEdit to verify correct functioning of VendPrcs, but does not imply a license for other use of VendEdit. You may use the licensed software on a single personal computer system, and make as many copies as needed for backup and archival purposes. LICENSE TERMS APPLICABLE TO ALL USE OF VendEdit EDITOR A fundamental goal of the VENDINFO system is that distributors must be able to rely upon automated testing to determine whether or not they may distribute your products. Therefore, any VENDINFO file which is distributed with your products must satisfy these conditions: It must be an "authenticated" file, containing valid authentication codes issued to you under your company name, or a company name you are authorized to use for this purpose. The "License for Use and Distribution" section must contain the actual text of your license agreement, rather than a pointer to some other document, and must include the following statements or their equivalent: "The attached VENDINFO data record is hereby incorporated by reference. Any distribution satisfying all the distribution requirements expressed in that data record is hereby authorized." (This means that distributors will NOT have to consult the "License for Use and Distribution" text itself, UNLESS you select "See Attached Text for Additional Requirements" in the data record.) The distributor also needs to be able to use the information you provide in the VENDINFO record without worrying about violating your copyright on the descriptions therein. As a condition of use of VendEdit, you also agree that every distributor shall have the benefit of this understanding: If the distributor satisfies your conditions for distributing the product, you authorize the distributor's use of your unaltered product descriptive texts without further permission. Finally, to keep any license disputes strictly between you and the distributor, you agree to this understanding: All licenses to distribute package are solely between the producer and distributor, and do not involve VENDINFO or Rams' Island Software. LICENSE TERMS APPLICABLE TO ALL USE OF VendPrcs PROCESSOR It is important that producers not forfeit any legal or copyright protections by making their distribution policy available to you in VENDINFO form. As a condition of use of VendPrcs, you agree that every such producer shall have the benefit of these understandings: All rights not expressly granted are reserved to the producer. Distribution of the product is expressly prohibited, except as specifically authorized by the producer. The producer may revoke any permissions granted you, by notifying you in writing.
